Does Natural Pain Relief Really Exist?

Everyone will suffer pain at some point in their lives. Grim asthis may sound, some pain is necessary - it's a signal from ourbrain that something is wrong in our body, something we need toaddress to protect our health and well-being. It can be causedby anything from a dental cavity to a broken bone to a disease.Once we determine where the pain is coming from, we can diagnoseand address the health problem, thus alleviating the pain. Sometimes, however, pain isn't done away with so easily - itremains with us despite all efforts to banish it. This is called'chronic' pain, distinguishable from 'acute' pain by itspersistence. Common examples of chronic pain include backaches,migraine headaches, and arthritis. The most popular treatment for chronic pain are prescriptionmedications, but these often have adverse side effects rangingfrom nausea to fatigue, and can cease to be effective once apatient builds a tolerance. Acupuncture has been used as a formof natural pain relief and cure for many chronic conditions forover two thousand years. Originating in China, acupunctureinvolves piercing the skin with thin needles on specific pointsof the body. Patients have claimed acupuncture has proveneffective in treating ailments such as neck pain, migraineheadaches, arthritic pain, and even depression.

This follows a public interest petition filed by an Indore based non-profit, seeking the court's intervention to put a stop to unethical clinical trials. Reports of unethical trials conducted on children and mentally challenged patients in Madhya Pradesh surfaced recently in various media reports. The petition filed by Swasthya Adhikar Manch was admitted by the court on February 6. </p>
